Automotive electronics repair BMW M550i (G30) — restoring operation after BDC2 water damage

In early December 2023, we began repairs on a BMW M550i (G30) imported from the USA. The car arrived with a broken windscreen. Water entered the cabin through the damaged glass and ran down a body pillar into the BDC2 (Body Domain Controller), damaging its electronics.

We removed the BDC2 and assessed the condition of its circuit board. Based on the inspection, we decided to use a donor BDC2 and transfer the necessary electronic components from the original module into it.

We chose this method because, at the time of the repair, we were not yet able to adapt a used BDC2 to another vehicle through software. The alternative was to order a new module.

We sourced a donor BDC2 with the same part number and transferred the processors and other necessary electronic components from the original module into it. After installing the prepared BDC2, we were able to start the car and restore it to working order.

Today, for this type of replacement, we can adapt a compatible used BDC2 to the vehicle through software without physically transferring components between circuit boards.

Cause of the damage

Water entered through the broken windscreen and ran down a body pillar into the BDC2.

Module assessment

We removed the BDC2 and assessed the condition of its circuit board to determine how to restore the car to working order.

Selecting a donor BDC2

We selected a used module with the same part number.

Transferring electronic components

We transferred the processors and other necessary components from the original module to the donor module.

Result

We installed the prepared module, started the car and restored it to working order.
