Replacing a BMW crystal gear selector knob: why the selector can stop working
Replacing a gear selector knob requires proper vehicle preparation. Working with the power connected can damage the GWS electronics.
BMW owners come to BavELab after their gear selector stops working following a DIY crystal knob installation. In our workshop's experience, disconnecting the vehicle's power supply is a preparation step that is often overlooked during this work.
Why replacing the knob requires care
The gear selector switch (GWS) selects transmission modes electronically. It contains control electronics and lever position sensors.
BMW SIB 61 09 23 addresses knob replacement without disconnecting the battery. It warns that removing powered electronic components can cause short circuits and damage. The bulletin covers several models, including the BMW X5 G05 and BMW 3 Series G20.
Before disassembly, check the instructions for your specific vehicle and disconnect power as prescribed. General advice from a video cannot replace your model's procedure.
What fault code 802683 means
BMW links code 802683 to knob replacement without disconnecting the battery. This does not always mean that the GWS has failed:
- Without other GWS faults, the unit may continue to function.
- With additional GWS faults, the bulletin specifies module replacement.
According to the BMW bulletin, clearing the fault memory cannot remove this entry. Assess the selector based on its operation and diagnostic results.
If a problem appears after replacement
When contacting a workshop, explain which knob was installed, whether the power supply was disconnected and what changed after reassembly. Keep photographs of any instrument cluster messages and the results of any diagnostic checks already carried out.
This information helps establish the sequence of events. Decisions about further work should be based on an inspection of the vehicle.
